Changing Desktop Colors & Designs – Win95

In the Display Properties window,

ç Appearance tab

The current desktop color is shown in the Color box. Click the down arrow button beside the Color box to select a new color.

ç Apply (or OK)

To change the Desktop pattern,

ç Background tab in the Display Properties window

ç Pattern button

Highlight the desired pattern.

ç OK

Highlight the picture that you want to use.

ç Display

Select Tile or Center

Changing Desktop Colors & Designs – Win98

 

Follow the same procedure as in Win 95. Instead of a Pattern button, Win98 displays a list of patterns from which to choose directly on the Background tab. In addition to Tile and Center, there is a Stretch option.

 

 

Copying Files – Win 95/98

 

Method 1:

è Start

ç Explore

ç ç folder containing the file to be copied

ç file name (to highlight it)

ç Edit on the menu bar

ç Copy

ç folder to receive the file (to highlight it)

ç Edit on the menu bar

ç Paste

Method 2:

Either from the Desktop on the folder containing the file (found by using My Computer),

ç file name (to highlight it)

ç Edit on the menu bar

ç Copy

ç folder to receive the file (to highlight it)

ç Edit on the menu bar

ç Paste

Method 3:

è file name

ç Copy

è folder to receive the file

ç Paste

A file can also be moved by dragging and dropping, but be aware that in Win95, drag and drop Moves the file rather than copying it. In Win95, hold the CTRL key while dragging and dropping to make a copy. This is not necessary in Win98.

 

Cutting and Pasting – Win95/98

 

To highlight the text to cut, click and drag the mouse pointer across that portion.

Place the cursor at the location where you wish to paste (same document or a different one).

You may paste multiple times. You may also use the Cut and Paste options under the Edit menu in place of using the right mouse button.

 

Date & Time Adjustment – Win95/98

To change the date, click the month and click the correct month from the list. Use the up and down arrows to the right of the year to select the correct year. Click the day of the month on the calendar.

To change the time, look at the box under the large clock. Click the number that you want to change and use the up and down arrows to make the correction or type in the correct numbers. Use the up and down arrows to switch back and forth between AM and PM.

To change the time zone:

ç Time Zone tab

Click on your part of the world or select a time zone from the pull-down list.

Defragmenting the Hard Drive

ç Start

Choose the drive to be defragmented.

Deleting Files – Win 95/98

ç ç C: (or other drive)

If the file is within a folder, ç <Folder Name>

ç <filename>, press DEL key

ç Yes in Confirm File Delete box

If the file has its own icon on the Desktop, drag it to the Recycle Bin.

The file has now been moved from its directory and placed into the Recycle Bin.

To remove files from the Recycle bin, open the File menu and

ç Empty Recycle Bin

ç Yes in Confirm Delete box

 

Moving Files

è My Computer icon on your Desktop

ç Explore

A window will open showing all the directories and files on your computer. The drives and directories and will be displayed on the left side of the window; drive and directory contents will be displayed on the right side. A plus sign (+) next to a drive or directory indicates that it contains subdirectories, which you can view by clicking the plus sign.

Highlight the file that you want to move by placing the mouse pointer over it and pressing and holding the left mouse button. While holding the left mouse button down, move the mouse cursor over the directory to receive the file. When the mouse cursor is over the directory, release the mouse button and the file will be moved.

To move multiple files, press and hold the CTRL key while clicking the files to be moved. Click and hold one of the selected files, drag it to the desired directory, and release the button. All of the selected files will be moved to the target directory.

 

Removing Fonts – Win95/98

Caution: Some fonts are crucial and should not be removed. Do not delete fonts that begin with the letters MS. Do not remove True Type fonts, which are preceded by an icon with two blue T’s or succeeded by the suffix TTF. If you use PowerPoint or Microsoft Office, do not delete Tahoma.

Select the font to remove, open the File menu, select Delete.

Renaming Files

ç Drive containing the file to be renamed, or the directory that either contains the file or that contains that subdirectory (or subdirectories) that contain the file.

è File to be renamed

ç Rename from the list

Enter the new filename.

 

Screen Savers – Win95/98

è any empty part of the Desktop

ç Properties in the pop-up box

ç Screen Saver tab in the Display Properties dialog box

Click the down arrow to the right of the Screen Saver box to open the drop-down list. Select a screen saver and it will be previewed in the monitor image.

Click the Settings button to change the screen saver settings, which vary with each screen saver.

 

 

Undeleting Files – Win95/98

ç ç Recycle Bin

Drag the file’s icon to the Desktop or into a folder.

You may also ç ç the file’s icon, which will open the file so that it can be saved.
