Changing Desktop Colors & Designs

Copying Files

ç ç Main icon in Program Manager window

ç ç File Manager

Select the drive containing the file to be copied.

ç the folder containing the file

ç the filename to highlight it

ç File Menu

ç Copy

In the dialogue box, enter the drive and, optionally, the folder to receive the copy.

ç OK (or press Enter), and the file will be copied.

 

 

Cutting and Pasting

ç = click left mouse button

Click and drag the mouse pointer across the text to be cut.

ç Edit

ç Cut

Place the cursor at the location where you wish to paste the cut portion. This may be the same document or a different document.

ç Edit

ç Paste

 

Date & Time Adjustment

ç = click left mouse button è = click right mouse button ç ç = double click

ç ç Date/Time icon

The date will appear in the format mm/dd/yy and the time in the format hh:mm:ss AM/PM. A pair of arrows are to the right of the date and time. To change the date and time, double click the incorrect part of the date or time and type in the correct number (or use the up and down arrows to change that number). After making the corrections,

Defragmenting the Hard Drive

Defragmenting must be done from DOS.

At the DOS prompt, enter the following and press the ENTER key:

defrag /b

Choose your hard drive to be defragmented and follow any on-screen instructions and suggestions. After defragmenting the computer will automatically reboot.

Deleting Files

ç ç Main icon in Program Manager Window

ç C: (or other drive) in the File Manager window

ç correct folder from list on left

ç file name in list on the right, press DEL on keyboard or

Open file menu, ç Delete

ç OK, ç Yes

Moving Files

ç ç Main icon in Program Manager window

ç ç File Manager

This will list all of the directories and files on your computer. The left side displays the directories; the right side displays the contents of directories. To see the contents of a directory, click the directory on the left side of the window.

Open the directory that contains the file that you want to move. Highlight the file by pressing and holding the left mouse button. While holding the left mouse button, move the mouse pointer to the directory (on the left side of the window) to which the file is to be moved. Release the mouse button when the pointer is over the directory and the file will be moved. This procedure is called the drag-and-drop method.

To move multiple files, press and hold the CTRL key while clicking the files to be moved. Each file will be highlighted. To move all the highlighted files, drag-and-drop one of them to the new location. All the selected files will be moved.

Removing Fonts

Caution: Some fonts are crucial and should not be removed. Do not delete fonts that begin with the letters MS. Do not remove True Type fonts, which are preceded by an icon with two blue T’s or succeeded by the suffix TTF. If you use PowerPoint or Microsoft Office, do not delete Tahoma.

The Fonts window displays a list called Installed Fonts, which are all the fonts installed on your computer. Highlight the one that you wish to delete,

ç Delete Font File From Disk

ç Yes To All (or OK)

 

Renaming a File

ç ç File Manager

This will list all of the directories and files on your computer. The left side displays the directories; the right side displays the contents of directories. To see the contents of a directory, click the directory on the left side of the window.

ç The file name to be changed

ç Rename

Enter the new filename

Screen Savers

ç Main icon in Program Manager

ç ç Desktop icon

Look for the Screen Saver section in the Desktop dialog box. Open the drop-down list of screen savers by clicking the down arrow on the right of the Name box. Move the mouse cursor over the screen saver of your choice and click it to select it.

Click the Setup button to make changes for the screen saver. Click the OK button to apply them.

You can see what the screen saver looks like by clicking the Test button. To stop the test, move your mouse. To tell the computer how long to wait before activating the screen saver, adjust the number of minutes in the Delay box.

Undeleting Files
