Q1. What is PPP?

A1. It stands for Point-to-Point Protocol. It allows you to use applications such as Netscape for graphical browsing, as if you had a direct connection to the Internet.

Q3. How do I install/setup Trumpet Winsock and Netscape on a Windows 3.x system?

A3. Installing Trumpet Winsock ============================== 1. Insert the Trumpet Winsock disk into your floppy drive 2. At the "C:\>" prompt, type the following: C:\> a: (or b: depending on which drive you inserted the disk) A:\> install The batch file install.bat will create the directory C:\TRUMPET and copy all files into that directory 3. Next, you will need to place the TRUMPET directory in your PATH, by doing the following: a. At the "C:\>" prompt, type: C:\> cd\ C:\> edit autoexec.bat b. Locate the "PATH=" statement in your autoexec if you have one and add the following to the end of the statement: ;C:\TRUMPET For example: PATH=C:\DOS;C:\WINDOWS;C:\MSOFFICE;C:\TRUMPET c. To exit and save the changes, press "Alt-F" and then press "x". Then, press ENTER when asked "Loaded file is not saved. Save it now?" 4. Now, load MS Windows by typing the following at the "C:\>" prompt: C:\> cd\windows C:\> win 5. You now need to create an Internet window to group your applications, by doing the following: a. From the Program Manager menu, choose "File", "New", click on "Program Group", then click on "OK" b. Next, in the Description box, type "Internet" and then click on "OK" 6. Next, you will need to create an icon to use for executing Trumpet Winsock a. From the Program Manager menu, choose "File", "New", and then click on "OK" b. In the Description box, type: Trumpet Winsock c. In the Command Line box, type: c:\trumpet\tcpman.exe d. In the Working Directory box, type: c:\trumpet e. Lastly, click on "OK" 7. Now, double click on the newly created Trumpet Winsock icon 8. Click on "Dialler" and then click on "Options" a. Click on "Automatic login and logout on demand" and then click on "OK" b. Now, click on "Dialler" again and then click on "setup.cmd" c. Enter the phone number provided to you for your PPP access and then click on "OK" d. Enter your username. e. Enter your password. Installing Netscape =================== 1. Insert Disk 1 of Netscape into your floppy drive 2. From the Program Manager menu, click on "File" and then click on "Run" 3. In the Command Line box, type: a:\setup 4. After the Netscape setup begins, click on "Next" to continue 5. Then, click on "Next" on the next two dialog boxes 6. At the "Select Folder" dialog box, click on "Internet" and then click on "OK" 7. When the installation program prompts you with "Setup Needs the Next Disk" remove DISK 1, insert DISK 2, and then click on "OK". 8. At the next dialog box, click on "Finish" to continue 9. When the dialog box titled "Would you like to connect to Netscape's setup site to continue your Netscape Navigator setup?" appears, click on "No". NOTE: When you have successfully installed Trumpet Winsock and Netscape, exit Windows and then reboot your system.
