The topic for the Spring 1998 TSU NRTS workshop was the development of web pages, using a tool to generate the html code for the pages. The tool chosen for this particular workshop was MSWord. This selection was made based upon the skill level and experience of the attendees. Since almost all of them had used MSWord or a similar word processor, it was not difficult for them to create documents and save them as html files. This technique enabled the users to quickly be successful in the development of some simple web pages.

Each attendee wrote a sample web page that could be used for a guide when they returned to their home sites. The sample included some text, pictures, and sample links. A digital camera was used to make individual pictures that were downloaded and inserted into the web page. A scanner was available for scanning pictures and/or text that the users brought with them. At the end of the training, each user had a personal sample web page that could be used and enhanced for inclusion in their home web sites.

The all-day workshop was designed primarily for people who were from institutions outside the Nashville area. For the convenience of staff at local institutions, the workshop was repeated on an as requested, individual basis for four days the following week. This multiple offering was well-accepted and approximately thirty total people were trained. Staff and faculty were trained from Fisk University, TSU, Meharry Medical College, Lane College, Alabama A&M, and Lawson State Community College (Birmingham).

The day after the first workshop, a panel discussion and question-answer session was conducted to talk about some current networking and world wide web issues.

Discussions were held on the year 2000 problem and how to prepare for it, network security, controlling inappropriate web usage, and multi-platform networking. Participating on the panel were Charlie Wrenn from the TSU NRTS, Dr. Alan Cunningham from NASA/Huntsville, and Mark Irish from Adnet representing NASA/Goddard.
