Technical Center Training

The Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) initiated a project to place internet nodes in all twenty-six of its Technical Centers (TC). The primary function of these nodes is to give each TC web and internet access and electronic mail for faculty and staff. Each TC was required to install the necessary hardware and connections for internet access and to install and configure a local area network with a WinNT server.

Because of the experience gained through the NRTS project in the areas of networking design and installation, WinNT, and network and WinNT system management, the TBR requested that the Tennessee State University NRTS trainers conduct workshops for the TC staffs. Three workshops were conducted, one each in East, Middle, and West Tennessee. This afforded the staffs from the TC's in those areas the opportunity to attend a workshop with a minimum of travel.

Topics covered included the basics of the internet/www concept and IP addressing, URL's, and the hardware necessary for an internet connection. The general procedures for installing and maintaining WinNT were discussed, as well as the establishment and control of e-mail accounts. Each attendee was also given the opportunity to build a sample cable for a LAN and test it on the demo network set up for the class.
